The Practice

Dr Frank Sardelic

Specialist General Surgeon

Born in Croatia, Dr Sardelic moved to Australia with his family as a small child. His early years were spent in Far North Queensland, before the family moved to Sydney . He graduated with his medical degree from Sydney University in 1986, and spent many years in surgical training at Westmead Hospital.

He was awarded his Fellowship in General Surgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1995, and then moved to Tamworth in 1997 . Since then he has worked at Tamworth Rural and Referral Hospital and Tamara Private Hospital.

Frank’s main surgical areas of interest are breast surgery (with a particular emphasis on surgery for breast cancer), thyroid and parathyroid surgery, salivary gland surgery, and melanoma surgery. He has extensive experience in these areas, as well as emergency surgery. He was instrumental in introducing the technique of sentinel node biopsy (used for breast cancer and melanoma patients) to Tamworth.

He is the Medical Director of BreastScreen NorthWest Hunter New England in Tamworth, as well as a member of BreastSurgANZ and a member of the Breast Cancer Trials Group, and recruits local patients for international Breast Cancer trials. He is the Supervisor for Surgical Training in Tamworth, and enjoys supporting young doctors as they undertake their surgical training. He also is an examiner for the University of New England Medical School. He is an active member of the Multidisciplinary Oncology Meetings at Tamworth Hospital.

Frank’s aim is to give you the information you need to make a well-informed decision about your treatment, and to support you through your treatment and recovery.

Dr Alison Harris

Practice Manager and Clinical Assistant

Dr Harris has been working with Dr Sardelic since 2005, and provides clinical assistance such as assisting at surgeries at Tamara Private Hospital, wound dressings, suture removal and postoperative care, as well as administrative assistance as the Practice Manager.

Alison graduated in 1986 from Sydney University with her medical degree, and after moving to Tamworth she worked with Dr Levendel assisting with stress testing. She then began assisting at Tamara Hospital theatres, initially with orthopaedics, before taking up the position of assistant with Dr Sardelic.

Jan & Bron

Receptionists

Our wonderful receptionists, Jan and Bronwyn, have been working with Dr Sardelic for more than 15 years. They are very experienced and caring, and will do their best to help you.

Jan was born in the UK (and still has a slight Welsh accent) , but has been in Australia for more than 20 years. She is very proud to have recently become an Australian citizen.

Bronwyn is a local lass, born and bred. She has moved away occasionally, but has always come back to Tamworth. Originally our typist, after the retirement of our receptionist Dot in 2020, Bronwyn stepped up to take on the role of our full-time receptionist.
